If you follow my Vlog at www.9orangenomads.com you may have noticed that I enjoy food tremendously. My willingness to try anything, once led me to eating conch ceviche from a small fishing boat moored to the boardwalk in The Bahamas. It was being served by, well let's just say, an unlicensed purveyor of aquatic anomalies. As Anthony Bourdain once quipped, "if he poisons his neighbors, he won't be in business long". With that being said, I also like to maintain a moderate to high level of physical fitness. What sounds like a catch 22 scenario is easily fixed in one easy step. The majority of the food I eat is nutrient dense and I consume it in small quantities. That's it. That's the big secret. It's really that simple. The vast majority of the time you should be consuming meals that contain a well balanced source of protein, carbohydrates, and fats in small portions. Small portions is the key to eating, period. People who eat junk food a lot face a real problem. They are always hungry. This in turn makes them consume even more food. The reason they are hungry is because the food they are feeding their bodies is not providing the essential components needed for the body to perform. Think of it this way. If you fill the gas tank on your car with soda, the gauge will say it's full but your car won't perform at all. Now, fill that same gas tank with the fuel that the vehicle was meant to operate with and voila, the car runs at optimal performance. If you think of your body as a high perforce machine and fuel it as such you will reap the benefits. You will also find that the better the fuel is that you provide your body, the less you will need.
Above is an example of a meal that keeps me on track for my physical goals. It's nutrient dense and extremely satisfying. Remember, clean eating doesn't have to suck. Shrimp, tomato, and chickpea curry with brown rice. It's outrageously tasty and leaves you satiated for a long time because it is so nutrient dense. Contrary to popular belief it won't leave you seated upon the porcelain throne either. Why don't I show us eating things like curry or egg whites on the Vlog? Because it's not sexy. No one cares that you eat healthy. Viewers want to see you tucking into a sandwich or a pizza. Remember, sex sells. There is nothing sexy about egg whites.
Just remember this. It's easy to train yourself to eat better when you know it comes with the reward of eating anything you want from time-to-time. Ok, who's hungry?
The fine print: I am not an expert. I don't have a degree in health, nutrition, living well, or any of that jazz. This is simply a commentary on what works for me. I did at one point weigh 240 pounds. I now weigh 182 pounds and have for almost 7 years now living by this simple principle. Contact your physician before starting any nutrition or fitness regimen.
